Moago Development Programme

The Moago Development Programme intended to provide a holistic approach to the development and retention of skills in the shopping centre/property management environment, as well as ensure a steady pipeline of the required skills at the right levels and at the right time. In this way, a better employment value proposition is offered to current employees, facilitating a career path within property management.

Actuarial Bursary Programme

Bursaries are granted for full-time study of actuarial science at various tertiary institutions. Applicants must show the ability to innovate and share our passion for people; thus maintaining our competitive advantage.

Successful applicants are expected to do a minimum amount of vacation work during the June and December holidays at the Liberty Head Office in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Bursaries are reviewed after each examination based on the student's academic performance and are renewed annually. All bursaries are granted on merit, but preference is given to black (African, Coloured and Indian) applicants.

Learnership Programme

Liberty is a company operating in the financial services industry and we are committed to the overall growth of South Africa and specifically the industry in which we operate.

Learnerships are vocational education and training programmes. They combine theory with practice and culminate in a qualification that is registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). The learner will spend time working under the guidance of a skilled employee or coach as well as spending time in a formal classroom environment learning theory. The learner who successfully completes a Learnership will have a qualification that signals occupational competence that is recognised throughout South Africa.

Training Outside Public Practice (TOPP)

Liberty Holdings Limited (Liberty) is over 50 years old, is the third largest insurer in South Africa and has approximately 6000 employees. Currently our Training Outside of Public Practice ((TOPP) Programme is aimed at creating and increasing the scarce skill of Chartered Accountants within the South African insurance environment.

The Liberty TOPP Programme is a 3 year rotation programme throughout the finance and audit areas of the organisation. It comprises of four core areas of rotation, which includes Internal Audit, Taxation, Financial Accounting and Management Accounting. What do Liberty look for when recruiting employees?
We look for diverse people who will embrace the Liberty culture and values order to generate a sustainable competitive advantage for the business. We look for people who are passionate about customer service and take responsibility for their actions. Our people must act with integrity, and be professional in their interactions with their colleagues and customers. Lastly, we look for people who enjoy sharing knowledge, are positive, and like to have fun at work.

When recruiting people, we look for the skills they have that could add value to our business. For each position in the business, candidates must have the relevant qualifications and experience and the potential to acquire new skills within a reasonable time.
What technical skills should employees have?
We have diverse career streams within Liberty. People who have an interest in the shopping centre or property management industry firstly need to have excellent customer service skills. Over and above this, depending on the specific role they fulfil, technical knowledge required ranges from administration, finance, and marketing, operations, and human resources knowledge.

People with technical backgrounds such as electrical and air conditioning are also very sought after in the property management environment.
How important are the "softer skills"?
The “softer”, behavioural skills are as important as technical skills. Skills and experience are important, culture fit and the ability to work in teams with other people is essential to ensure success in our business.
Is there room at Liberty for graduates who lack experience?
Yes, Liberty runs a very extensive Graduate programme that equips new Graduates with the necessary foundation in order to excel in his/her role once the programme is completed. The programme includes both theory and practical and by the end of the practical, the graduate has had adequate exposure to be confident in their new role.

Recruiting people without experience is exciting; they bring new ideas, energy, and creativity to the business.
How much training and development do employees receive?
Employees receive extensive training and development. This is also based on business and individual career path needs. In 2009, Liberty spent a total of R25 856 million on staff training. Liberty is working towards aligning its employee training objectives to the relevant Sector Education and Training authority’s targets of ensuring that 85% of employees trained are black and 54% female.

We strive to develop a pool of talent through accelerated development, shadowing and mentoring programmes
